How To Create Lead-Generating Events

At 23 years old I wanted to learn more about wine. But when I searched around for local wine groups or events but I couldn’t find any. And that’s when I decided I would start my own.

I used the website Meetup.com to set up a group. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one interested in learning about wine. In just under 2 months, the group had over 100 members. It turned out to be a really awesome experience. Not only did I learn a ton about wine but I met some really great people that I wouldn’t have met otherwise. Consequently, I made some great friends through our events and many of them ended up in my database.

Here’s the hook: This was a totally unintentional side-effect of doing something that interested me.

So what interests you?

Or is there something you want to learn more about? I highly recommend looking for a group or starting your own.

If you join a group, start participating in events. Find out who is running the show, offer to help with upcoming events. If you join a kickball league and they already go to pizza after the game, offer to plan the end of season party.

If you start your own group, follow through. Don’t just create the group. Find something that your group can do. If you are a table tennis enthusiast let your ping-pong flag fly! If your city doesn’t have public ping-pong tables, go to your city’s Park and Recreation Commission to lobby for them! Organize a ping-pong tournament block party! When you’re passionate about something it’s easy to come up with ways to expand and promote your hobby.

However, don’t get involved with something because it might generate leads. Join because you have a genuine interest. As a result, you will build relationships and if you do end up getting business, it’s the icing on the cake. Show your passion, engage, and be authentic; the business will come.
